Nathan Joseph Alexander

Nathan Joseph Alexander of Denver died April 2, 2015, in his dormitory room at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., where he was a sophomore. He was 20. He took his own life.

Memorial services in Vermont will be held at the Middlebury College Chapel on Sunday, April 12, at 11 a.m.

The memorial service in Denver is scheduled for April 18, 2:30 p.m., at Jefferson Unitarian Church, 14250 W. 32nd Ave., in Golden. Rabbi Joe Black will officiate at the burial on Sunday, April 19, 2 p.m., at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary is making the arrangements.

Nathan was born July 31, 1994, at Rose Hospital in Denver.

He attended Hackberry Hill Elementary School and North Arvada Middle School. At age 14, Nathan was the Poetry Society of Colorado Teen Contest winner.

Nathan graduated with a Classics Diploma from The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn. He was on the varsity sailing team and co-head of the Hotchkiss Political Union.

Nathan attended the New Englanders Young Writers Conference at Bread Loaf, Middlebury College, in 2010.

In the summer of 2011, Nathan served with the Round Square International Service program building a school in Ladakh, northern India.

He interned in the Denver Congressional office of Rep. Diana DeGette in the summer of 2012 and in her Washington, DC, office the following summer.

After being accepted to Middlebury College in 2013, Nathan studied economics, computer science and public policy. He was a member of the Socially Responsible Investment Group, the sailing team, Hillel, the Southern Society and Architecture Table.

He interned with the Gerson Lehrman Group in Austin, Texas, in the summer of 2014.

Nathan is survived by his mother Marilyn S. Chappell of Lakewood, his father Barton Alexander of Denver, his sister Elise Chappell Alexander of Lakewood and Denver, and his grandmother and step-grandfather Simie and David Bayless of Denver and Green Valley, Ariz.

The family suggests that donations be made in Nathan’s name to The Hotchkiss Fund, The Hotchkiss School, 11 Interlaken Rd., Lakeville, CT 06039 or the Ron and Jessica Liebowitz Scholarship Fund, Middlebury College, 700 Exchange St., Middlebury, VT 05753.
