Myra Levy

Myra Levy, former JCC board member and past president of NCJW, passed away June 4, 2009, in Denver. Rabbis Steven Foster and Julian Cook and Cantor Regina Heit officiated at the June 7 service at Temple Emanuel. Interment followed at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

Mrs. Levy was born Sept. 25, 1918, to Al and Florence Glick, owners of concession stands throughout the area. She attended Park Hill Elementary, Smiley Junior High, East High, and DU.

She began helping out in her parents’ business as a child, as did her brother Sylvan.

She met her future husband, J. Leonard Levy, at her confirmation dance at Temple Emanuel. Myra and Leonard worked at Mr. Glick’s concession stands in Winter Park and Berthoud Pass on weekends to save up money for their marriage, which took place on July 30, 1939.
Mr. Levy passed away in 1991.

Active in NCJW, the JCC and Temple Emanuel Sisterhood, Mrs. Levy recruited members for the new JCC when it opened on East Alameda. She also was instrumental in arranging college mixers held jointly by area sisterhoods in the 1960s.

When DPS was building Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson High Schools, she advocated putting swimming pools into all three high schools.

Mrs. Levy taught water aerobics for nearly 30 years at the JCC and other Denver-area locations.

Mrs. Levy is survived by her children Lana (Ted) Friedman and Sheldon (Leslie) Levy; and grandchildren Amy Friedman, Brian Friedman and Mariah (Jeremy) Kutner.
