Among the peripheral victims of 9/11 were non-jihadist American Muslims. Apparently, the Saudi-based fundamentalist Islamic terrorists who planned and carried out the 9/11 attack either didnt know or didnt care about the way in which their Muslim brethren in America and elsewhere in the world would be viewed. American Muslims defend themselves, saying that Islam is a peaceful religion, and that the terrorists are but a fringe element. Still, mainstream Muslims are viewed with mistrust and misunderstanding, deserved or not.
A welcome step toward changing that image is a letter written Aug. 26 by prominent American Muslims including Americas two Muslim Congressmen calling for Hamas to immediately release six-year Israeli hostage Gilad Shalit. The Muslim leaders state that Hamass inhumane detention of Shalit goes against the teachings of Muhammad.
