Merrily Cohen Wallach, co-founder of NCJW’s Children’s Traveling Theatre and past co-director of Shwayder Theatre, passed way Dec. 10, 2020, in Denver, a few months shy of her 99th birthday. Son-in-law Stephen Kapnik officiated at the private graveside service Dec. 13 at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
“In addition to her family, Merrily was best known for her love of theater,” her family said. “She had a strong local presence, and her love for NCJW’s Children’s Traveling Theatre was central to her life for nearly 60 years.
“Merrily was the heart of the family, from the early days as the youngest of three until her death . . . She wanted to be remembered for her kindness, caring, humor and love.”
Mrs. Wallach was born March 4, 1922.
Along with co-director Evelyn Tucker at the JCC’s Shwayder Theatre, she brought laughter and tears to audiences with actors of all ages and abilities.
Mrs. Wallach dabbled in poetry and created the perfect ditty for each occasion; crosswords; Words with Friends; and Facebook, where she found sustaining connections with new and old friends.
Sy Wallach, her husband of 63 years, passed away in March, 2008.
“Merrily laughed a lot in her last weeks,” the family said. “She died with zero fear, completely aware, eloquently communicative, with love radiating from every pore.”
Merrily Wallach is survived by her children Andrew (Maureen VanNorden) Wallach, Deanne (Stephen) Kapnik, Joan (Arthur Rosenblum) Wallach and Daniel (Cate Hart) Wallach; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
