Maybe the ‘military option’ is already underway

One Iranian nuclear scientist was mysteriously were killed last week; another was injured. Maybe the “military option” is already underway — it just doesn’t look like what we expected.

Maybe, Israel(?) or the US(?) or both(?) or others, too(?), are using direct force against the Iranian nuclear program, but not with “shock-and-awe.” Rather, with a scalpel, a series of minor surgeries.

As everyone knows, there is no bigger oxymoron than “minor surgery.” Just consult all the people with untold complications from minor surgery — or the people who did not survive it at all. Minor surgery has left Iran flailing and frustrated with the death of a top nuclear scientist. Minor surgery is surgery just the same.

Needless to say, this is pure speculation. Perhaps Israel, or the US, or both, or others are, indeed, planning a military strike against Iran because it relentlessly pursues nuclear weaponry, all international objections and sanctions notwithstanding. But one thing is perfectly clear. The assassination of Iranian scientists is not a new method of opposition to the program, and is responsible for the Iranian delay in making an a-bomb.

We have previously made a point that is necessary to repeat:

These Iranian delays do not reflect overwrought or dishonest Israeli predictions of when Iran will reach its “point of no return,” after which it would take an all out war (perhaps even a nuclear one) to defang Iran. The dates in these predictions keep getting later because Israel makes it predictions on the basis of all other things being equal, but Israel tries not to let them remain equal. Israel (or someone else) incrementally chips away at the Iranian nuclear capacity.

One method of choice is definitive: the assassination of people whose expertise make the program possible.

“The Zionist regime this time shed the blood of university professor Dr. Majid Shahriari to curb Iran’s progress,” the office of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said angrily in a statement posted on its web site.

In the face Iran’s threatened genocide and politicide (Abba Eban’s term for the murder of a state), “the Zionist regime” and others will keep doing just that.
