Margaret Methner
Margaret B. Methner, who with her late husband Lou was one of the earliest members of Rodef Shalom, passed away from natural causes on June 23, 2020, in Denver. Rabbi Bernard Gerson officiated at the private graveside service June 25 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary arranged the services.
“Margaret will be remembered for her quick wit, generosity and her devotion to her family,” her loved ones said.
Margaret (Marga) was born in Kassel, Germany, in 1925 and experienced the terrifying tidal changes in German life as the Nazis rose to power. She attended school under the protection of Ursuline nuns while her brother attended Jewish day school.
She and her immediate family fled Nazi Germany in 1938 and immigrated to the US with sponsorship by relatives in Cleveland, Ohio. After high school, she earned a practical nurse’s license and moved from Cleveland to New York.
She spent time in Philadelphia, married, moved back to Cleveland, divorced and came to Denver in 1949.
Mrs. Methner joined the Jewish singles club at the JCC, where she met Lothar “Lou” Methner. They married in 1957 and were together for 44 years until his death in 2001.
A member of Rodef Shalom’s Sisterhood, Mrs. Methner ran the synagogue’s gift shop and seniors’ group for years. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah and presided over the TOPS group at the Cook Park Recreation Center.
She was grateful to have lived to 95 and participated in weddings, celebrations and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.
Margaret Methner is survived by her children Drs. Steven (Damaris) Methner and Joanne (Dr. Todd) Lander; grandchildren Brian (Jen Sommer) Methner, Alisa (Preston) Bair, Micayla Lander and Dylan Lander; and nieces and nephews.
