Maccabi sports people — we love the company

Denver — and its Jewish community — loves company.

Who can forget the red carpet treatment Denver gave to the Democratic National Convention just two summers ago? And the international prestige generated by hosting the G-8 Summit in 1997? Not to mention the Jewish community’s turn, playing host to the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations in 1994?

For all of these events, Denver’s Jewish community enthusiastically welcomed the waves of guests that descended on our city, or joined the citizenry-at-large in showing off our city.

The excitement of company is upon us again with the JCC 2010 Maccabi Games, starting this Sunday night  and running through next Thursday, Aug. 5.

Some 1,300 Jewish teens, ages 12-16, will be here to compete in a variety of sports, participate in community service projects and be pampered with Denver hospitality from hundreds of Jewish families as well as from area synagogues. Denver will also play host to many of these athletes’ families, who want to make a family vacation in Colorado. Read further coverage of the Games

We can’t think of too many competitors for this combination: healthy sports competition and Jewish content — all in front of the backdrop of Colorado’s natural beauty and Denver’s cosmopolitan sparkle. For this reason, this newspaper is pleased to welcome the JCC Maccabi Games guests with the special section accompanying this week’s edition.

In the process of publicizing the Maccabi Games, we became acutely aware of how much time, work, cooperation and generosity it took for the JCC’s staff and lay leadership to pull off an event of this magnitude. Hats off to all involved!

To our guests, “beruchim ha-ba’im” — welcome! Play hard, have fun, make friends, and take in the awesome revelations disclosed by our breathtaking mountains.
