Local rabbis react to Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling

The Intermountain Jewish News interviewed two local rabbis for their reaction to the Supreme Court ruling on June 26 extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

Rabbi Evette Lutman, spiritual leader of Reconstructionist B’nai Havurah, told the IJN’s Andrea Jacobs that “In my lifetime, I never thought I would see this. I’ve been out and in the trenches since 1975, and I’ve suffered a lot of discrimination.” The Supreme Court’s decision, she said, “is beyond my wildest dreams.”

On the other side of the spectrum, Rabbi Tzvi Steinberg, spiritual leader of Denver’s Zera Abraham synagogue, said to Chris Leppek that “a significant concern I have is that it does put religion on the wrong side of the law.”
