Links to…Purim spoofs and shpiels

Sometimes it’s easier to believe in providence. Just when we need it most – after news of political uprisings, deadly massacres and horrific natural disasters – Purim arrives. A chance to tune out of the stress of the real world and instead tune into the world of the absurd. Granted the real world frequently feels absurd, but we’re talking about something different here. We’re talking about the conscious decision to focus on the fun.

There’s a famous saying associated with Purim: “Ade lo yada”, or liberally translated, to the point where one has no clue what the heck is going on. That’s the level we’re meant to achieve on this holiday. It’s really important, at least once a year, to lose the constrictions and just party!

In keeping with this spirit, we’ve collected some links to videos and other spoofs that made us laugh out loud.

If you haven’t yet check out these text-to-speech videos, do. The whole concept is pretty hilarious, and works particularly well for this explanation of Purim.

  • Backward: The Forward’s annual Purim spoof, this time including guest Bintl Brief author Natalie Portman giving advice on motherhood and pregnancy.

  • Yeshiva University’s Maccabeats acapella Purim number.
