Lillian Katzman, 96, of Aurora passed away March 25, 2012, at Shalom Cares, where she lived for the past 15 years. Rabbis Sara Gilbert and David Zucker officiated at the March 28 service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Lillian will be missed for her kind and loving spirit, her sense of humor and her generous nature, the family said.
Born Jan. 20, 1916, in New York City, she attended Ann Reno Teachers College and received her BS and MA in education from Columbia University.
The private assistant to historian and Civil Rights activist W.E.B. DuBois for six years, Lillian then worked as a special education teacher in the New York City School System for 18 years.
After moving to Denver in the late 1970s to be with her daughter, Lillian became active in Democratic politics and served on the Aurora Commission for the Elderly for seven years.
She eventually moved to Shalom Cares, where she enjoyed reading, playing bridge and writing book reviews for the residents newsletter.
Lillian is survived by her daughter Carol Goldstein; granddaughters Jennifer Jones and Deborah Betson; great-grandsons Oliver and Alex Jones; and sister Gertrude Kasle of Florida and brother David Klepper of Israel.
