Leonard Herz

Len HerzLeonard “Len” Herz, a successful businessman and longtime SCORE counselor, passed away Sept. 5, 2012, in Denver. Rabbi Richard Rheins officiated at the Sept. 6 service at Temple Sinai. Interment followed at Rose Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“We have lost one of the most vocal and unwavering supporters of workshops and the work that we do,” said fellow SCORE counselor Bob Douthitt. “We could always depend on Len’s strong support for workshops with clients and all who would listen.

“He will be greatly missed.”

Mr. Herz was born June 25, 1931, in New York City and received a CPA degree from the City College of New York.

Most recently a financial consultant for companies with annual revenues of up to $60 million, he began his career as audit supervisor for Coopers & Lybrand, 1954-1960.

He moved to Denver in 1963.

After serving as assistant controller at Merritt, Chapman & Scott, a multi-division holding company, Mr. Herz was treasurer (controller) of Baker Industries, Inc., 1966-1973.

Mr. Herz was vice president of Del Laboratories, Inc., 1973-1974; and executive vice president, director and financial vice president at Holmes Protection, Inc.

In 1982, he began working with major companies on profit improvement, the acquisition and sale of businesses, obtaining financing and valuations, and assisting with management when necessary.

Mr. Herz married Debra “Debby” Herz in 1995.

The former director of the Executive Association of Greater New York, Mr. Herz joined SCORE as a volunteer small business counselor 16 years ago.

He always advised future business owners to “look before you leap” and to seriously evaluate whether a business venture was realistic and profitable. “Len loved SCORE,” Debby said.

An avid traveler, he also enjoyed playing golf and bridge.

Mr. Herz was the husband of Debra “Debby” Herz of Denver and the late Sally Herz; the father of Michael (Sherrie Sue) Herz of New York, Hildee (Glen) Isaacs of Georgia and Larry (Lisa) Herz of Denver; stepfather of Sheryl (Jon) Goodman and Scott Moses; brother of Flo (Ben) Sckolnik; and grandfather of Elyse, Rachel, Elliot, Sammy, Lindsay, Lyla and Ryan.
