For the life of us, we cannot understand the penchant of the High Court in Israel (its Supreme Court) to extend leniency to Yigal Amir.
Amir was convicted of murdering Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1994. As if murder were not heinous enough, the murder of a prime minister affects much more than himself and his family. It calls into question the viability of the country and the viability of its democracy. Yigal Amirs crime was as bad as it gets.
Yet, Amir has been allowed to marry while in prison. Now, the court has ordered a further easing of his conditions by allowing him to have a chevruta, a Torah study partner, for an hour every two weeks.
Recall that Amir, before his act of murder, was a Torah student. He not only killed a human being and dented a democracy, he disgraced the Torah in an especially egregious manner. He became the Torahs ultimate anti-role model.
The logic of the courts continuing leniency on Yigal Amir escapes us.
