APPARENTLY, Leiby Kletzky was tied and bound by his killer. Unlike at Abrahams final test at the akeidah, the Binding of Isaac, this time no angel voice rang out to stop the knifing of the child. This time there was no Elijah the Prophet or Elisha to miraculously come and resuscitate the poor dead child.
With the evidence of wounds and scratches on the killers wrist, I find it unbearable to think or know about the evidence of Leibys struggle in his final moments.
Moments of a little, innocent child, eight-years-old such a tender defenseless age who trusted a fellow religious Jew, an adult, in desperate terror trying to fight for his life, making every effort to pry himself loose from this trusted adult who, it turned out to be in the thought process of an eight-year- old boy, a bad man.
What are some of the lessons we can learn from the epic and macabre tragedy of this dear child being butchered within our very own community?
Of course, we are all heartsick. My heart weeps for the Kletzky family and its oppressive grief, weighed deep down as the family is with one of the worst losses imaginable.
THE issue of mental illness has risen to the fore. I dont know whether this murder was a result of mental illness, pedophilia, sheer evil or an amalgamation of all of them. Even if the tragedy stemmed from mental illness, as heartwrenching and devastating as it is for me to think that the destiny of the killers soul became that of a child murderer, in the realm of consequence this is not relevant.
