The Intermountain Jewish News supports the efforts of the National Newspaper Association to freeze postage rates.
On Monday, March 24, the NNA put out a call to its members, calling for the United States Postal Service’s board of governors to remove Postmaster Louis DeJoy:
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has announced his intention to step down but continues to push forward in plotting a double-digit rate increase for July and to degrade rural mail service despite a 300-page opinion by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) opposing the move.
In response, the Keep US Posted campaign has launched an effort to push the USPS Board of Governors to immediately remove Postmaster General DeJoy and to freeze postage rates until his successor can be installed and evaluate the negative impact rates hikes have had on mail volume.
All NNA members are encouraged to join this effort. Please see the information below and take action as instructed in support of this effort.
An unprecedented postage increase could be approved in April. Tell USPS & key members of Congress that DeJoy needs to go — now.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy needs to go now! Under his mismanagement, USPS has racked up losses over $16 billion and counting in just two years. Although he’s announced his retirement, DeJoy hasn’t said when he will retire — and continues to hurt USPS and Americans who depend on it.
Most importantly, DeJoy is plotting one more gut punch to USPS and the Americans who depend on it: A huge July postage increase as high as 11.6% that is set to be approved by the Board of Governors in April. The USPS Board of Governors must fire DeJoy and freeze the rates now!
Please help by sending a message to the USPS Board of Governors and key members of Congress — and ask them to fire DeJoy and prevent the July rate increase.
Under an hour later, DeJoy resigned — but the battle isn’t over. As the NNA updated its members:
Shortly after the alert was sent, Postmaster General DeJoy announced his resignation. That is a positive outcome but it is even more critical to ensure that the July rate increase is paused to allow his successor to evaluate the negative impact of the twice-a-year increases on mail volume and to chart a new positive course to rebuild mail volume and customer confidence.
Please take action to support the campaign if you have not yet done so.
The Postal Service is such a pivotal institution it was explicitly enumerated (Article 1, Section 8 clause 7) in the Constitution. The Founding Fathers understood that a country comprised of a number of states across large territories required an overarching system of communication. To this day, USPS is the only delivery service in the country that reaches every single address in this country.
The National Newspaper Association works closely with USPS, maintaining regular communication and facilitating conversations between its members and USPS to help ensure that newspapers — including the Intermountain Jewish News — are delivered promptly to readers.
The NNA knows, as does the IJN, that USPS employees work to deliver the mail, sometimes, as we have all witnessed, delivering long after the sun has set.
Neither the NNA nor the IJN deny that USPS is plagued with financial issues, though these issues stem not from day-to-day operations, but largely from a provision that USPS pre-fund its employees’ healthcare, which has created a deep hole for the service.
The IJN continues to work with the USPS staff here in Denver, whom we know work hard to get our newspaper to your doorstep.
These top down decisions, such as semi-annual rate increases or prioritizing packages over mail and periodicals, deeply impact all Americans. Businesses — such as newspapers — are forced to increase their prices or, as the IJN has often done, swallow the ever-increasing costs. Twice annual price hikes are not sustainable and may serve only to push more mail out of the system, which, many posit, was DeJoy’s intention; to forget about the mail and focus solely on delivering packages as more and more people shift to online purchases.

Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Amber McReynolds, chair, USPS Board of Governors and Michael Elston, secretary, USPS Board of Governors.
