Kaplans and Strear, of Keshet

If you don’t like to laugh and you never want to cry, even tears of joy, if you are emotionless and heartless and prefer black, sunless rooms, if you are positively dispossessed and discombobulated every time somebody does something beautiful, if you really enjoy being down and being glum — if you never stop to smell the flowers and always let a smile, a wink, a crazy joke and a magnanimous gesture pass you by — we have a suggestion: Skip the Keshet of the Rockies dinner next Wednesday night.

This worthy organization for children with special needs, including severe special needs, is honoring some of the most fun-loving, joke-loving, life-is-good-with-them-around, considerate, go-out-of-their- way-to-help-you happiness freaks in the world: Burt and Sharon Kaplan and Larry Strear.

Don’t worry. If you don’t make it to the dinner, the honorees will find you, no matter how hard you try to hide, sometime during your lifetime. But why make it hard on yourself? This unique threesome will be available, in one room (it’s a good thing it’ll be a big room, what with all of their running to greet and meet and welcome and embrace and empathize and catch up), at one time, next Wednesday.

OK. We admit. We don’t know much about raising buffalo, one of Larry Strear’s special affinities. But anybody with an artistic soul, like Strear’s, and a philanthropic family, like Strear’s, is as good a competitor as we can think of for the likes of Sharon Kaplan, who’s been known to snap up, daily, little kids for rides to the zoo and the ice cream parlor, and for the likes of Burton Kaplan, who’s been known to cast the most marvelous, loving, helpless, amused, contagious, what-do-you-want-me-to-do-about-it laugh upon any one and any group of G-d’s creatures.

OK. Don’t get us started. It will only add hours and wrinkles and secrets and echoes to the extensive tributes already planned for the honorees at the dinner — for our community’s experts at hopscotching between every good cause and every hidden mitzvah, not to mention, every child’s smile.
