Judge Irving I. Zimmerman

Judge Irving ZimmermanJudge Irving I. Zimmerman, 94, passed away Feb. 24, 2009,  in Deerfield Beach, Fla.

He was the father of Steven (Barbara) Zimmerman of Denver.

Born in Woonsocket, RI in 1914, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lena Zimmerman. He married Eleanor M. Elovich in 1941. They lived in Woonsocket until 1997, then moved to Singer Island, Fla. and later, to Deerfield Beach.

Judge Zimmerman was a graduate of Providence College and Harvard Law School, and earned a masters in taxation from Boston University.

A member of the RI Bar Association, Judge Zimmerman was an attorney and probate court judge in Woonsocket and Burrillville, RI.

He was past president of the Lions Club and PTA, as well as past chairman of the board of the former Fogarty Hospital. 

He was also a founding member of the Dean Roscoe Pound Foundation.

Judge Zimmerman was president of Congregation B’nai Israel, a lifetime member of B’nai Brith and a Hadassah associate.

He later became of member of Temple Emanu-El in Palm Beach, Fla.

In addition to his son and wife, Judge Zimmerman is survived by his daughter, Felice (Dr. Neil) Kantor, Ft. Lauderdale, and grandchildren Robin (Gavi) Hanssen and Marty (Shira) Zimmerman, Denver; Michael Zimmerman, Saratoga Springs, NY; Robert (Carolyn) Kantor, Sheryl (Bruce) Butchin, Dr. Michelle (Dr. Jefferson) Herring, and Adam Kantor, all of Florida. He is also survived by great-grandchildren Azriel, Yonah, Dov, and Meirav Hanssen, Alyssa and Andrew Zimmerman (all of Denver), Mason Kantor, and Jacob and Joshua Herring (all of Florida).

Funeral services and burial were in Woonsocket, RI.
