Should Holmes be put to death? Judaism and the death penalty

the mentally ill convicted murderer of 12 human beings be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, or death? On July 16, the jury in the James Holmes trial handed down a unanimous verdict in record time — guilty on 24 counts of first-degree murder stemming from the July 20, 2012, massacre at an Aurora theater. Guilty verdicts also were rendered on 140 related charges of attempted murder. The defense failed to prove that Holmes fit the legal criteria of the insanity plea. Expert witnesses for the prosecution said the 27-year-old was mentally ill but understood right from wrong. The jury agreed.
