Jay Heins

Jay Heins, 95, owner and operator of Heins Restaurant for 35 years, passed away March 24, 2020, at home in El Paso, Texas. Rabbi Ben Zeid-man officiated at the graveside service March 25 at Temple Mount Sinai Cemetery, El Paso.

“Jay was perhaps best known for his hearty laugh, genuine kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion,” his family said. “He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.”

Mr. Heins was born Aug. 9, 1924, in Dallas, Texas, to Julius and Henrietta Heins, and raised in El Paso. He graduated from El Paso High School and Texas College of Mines.

In WW II, he served as a Navy Marine Pharmacist Mate First Class during Operation Watchtower in the South Pacific.

Mr. Heins met his beloved Mary in 1950. They were married for 63 years. Mrs. Heins predeceased her husband. They led more than 20 summer trips with students and adults through Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Mr. Heins was a restaurateur until his retirement in 1995. He competed in numerous races and marathons, was a voracious reader and eagerly gave away books he enjoyed to friends and family.

Jay Heins is survived by his four children Mark (Jackie) Heins, Amy (Allan) Goldfarb, Barry (Tracy) Heins and Andy (Leslie) Heins; grandchildren Shelley Goldfarb, Carroll-Anne (Graham Becherer-Bailey) Heins, Judith (Ryan) Jacobson, Matthew Heins, Aaron (Rebecca) Goldfarb, Benjamin (Rebecca) Heins, Emily Heins, Sarah Heins, Kelsey Heins and Meredith Heins; and great-granddaughters Margot and Olivia Jacobson.

The family expresses its deepest gratitude to Dr. Muneer Assi, Julie Zuniga, RN, FNP-C, RN, Dr. Edward Assi and the entire staff at Envision Hospice.
