Jane Harper

Jane C. Harper, former reporter, editor and president of the Colorado Press Assn., passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009.

Born Dec. 18, 1925, in Albert Lea, Minn., Mrs. Harper enrolled at CU for her freshman year and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943.

After moving to Colorado, she worked for the Walsenburg World-Independent, The Gunnison News-Champion and Empire Courier, and the Aurora Star.

She was editor of the Colorado Republican Party’s weekly Colorado Trumpet for 12 years, winning numerous awards.

She also assisted several state legislators from both parties with weekly columns and articles for their local newspapers.

Mrs. Harper became president of Colorado Press Women in 1960.

She joined the staff of the Colorado Press Association in 1978, producing six bienniel legislative directories  and eventually becoming assistant manager.

Mrs. Harper began compiling a history of Colorado newspapers in 1988.

The CPA awarded her an honorary membership in 1992.

Mrs. Harper is survived by her husband Ralph J. Harper; two daughters; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

She was predeceased by her son Michael Douglas Hoye of Westminster.
