Jacqueline Goodstein Friedman

Jacqueline Goodstein FriedmanJacqueline “Jackie” Goodstein Friedman, who grew up in Denver, passed away Nov. 9, 2013, at age 94. Burial took place in New Montefiore Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Long Island.

Jackie was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Omaha, Neb., and moved with her family to Denver. She attended Teller Elementary, Gove Junior and East High School.

After earning her bachelor’s degree at DU, she became a teacher. However, she found that unofficial anti-Semitic quotas limited her opportunities at DPS.

She worked at Goodstein’s Delicatessen, located at 3229 Colfax and owned by her parents Harry “Yudie” and Blanche Goodstein, for several years.

In part to get away from what she viewed as the insular world of Jewish Denver, Jackie left for New York City in 1948. Not after she arrived she met Morris Friedman, whom she married in Denver on Sept. 29, 1948.

Mr. Friedman passed away in 1993.

Jackie became the vanguard of the Jewish settlement of Long Island and taught elementary school in nearby Bellmore, NY, for years.

Following her retirement, she assisted her son Norman with his company Plant Trends, which provided lush vegetation to businesses and shopping malls.

Jackie, who was among the few survivors of the pre-WW I generation, kept in close touch with her old Denver colleagues.

She remained in her house in North Bellmore for 61 years until her death.

Jackie is survived by her sons Norman Friedman and Martin Friedman; and grandchildren Jeremy, Barry and Wendy.
