Longtime Denver businessman Jack Zelinger passed away Aug. 23, 2021 in Winter Park. Funeral services were held Aug. 29 at Emanuel Cemetery, with Rabbis Joseph Black and Steven Foster officiating.
Mr. Zelinger, 86, was born on January 1, 1935, and grew up on Denver’s West Side. He attended North High School and the University of Denver, where he played varsity basketball and graduated with honors in accounting.
Mr. Zelinger co-founded and led businesses that included Sel-Low stores, Yellow Front, and Checker Automotive. He was also a successful real estate investor.
His family said Mr. Zelinger “relished partnering with brilliant, immigrant investors, complementing their skills with his business acumen.”
Mr. Zelinger and his wife Diane were married for 64 years prior to his death. They had three children, including Steve Zelinger, Alyse Ware (Ron) and Michele Zelinger, along with six grandchildren.
His family referred to Mr. Zelinger as a smart and humble man, calling him a “Rock of Gibraltar” to his family.
“He was steadfast, loyal and the best friend anyone could ever – and did ever – have,” said Mr. Zelinger’s family.
“He was known as a connoisseur of a good joke and ice cream, the joys of which he lovingly passed on to his grandchildren along with the wisdom of a life well and beautifully lived.”
Ten years ago, the Zelingers retired to Sun Lakes, Ariz., while spending summers at their home in Winter Park. They were active members of Congregation Emanuel of Denver and SLIC of Sun Lake, Ariz.
