Irwin Keinon

Irwin Keinon

Irwin Keinon, a native of Denver and longtime high school educator here, passed away Aug. 26, 2021. Funeral services were held in Denver on Aug. 29, with burial at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Mr. Keinon’s grandson, Rabbi Yehoshua Wolfe, officiated at services.

Born in Denver on March 20, 1931, the youngest of three children, Mr. Keinon grew up in North Denver and attended North High School. He served in the US Air Force in Long Beach and Oakland, Calif., 1951-1955.

He met his first wife, the late Margot Keinon, at the age of 23 in Oakland. The couple moved to Denver and raised two children, Cindy Wolfe and Herb Keinon.

Mr. Keinon taught for over two decades at Denver’s East High School, taking enormous pride in making English literature relevant for his students.

After the sudden death of his wife Margot in 1984, Mr. Keinon married Adele Mendelsohn and spent the next 37 years with her in the Bay Area.

Mr. Keinon’s family said:

“Irwin will be remembered for his deep love of his people, Israel and the poetry of John Keats and Shakespeare. He taught us how to appreciate life and nature: the hummingbirds, trees, sunflowers, deer, the mountains. He often told us to appreciate every moment we have because life passes so quickly.”

He is survived by his wife, Adele Mendelsohn Keinon; children, Cindy (Mike) Wolfe of Denver and Herb (Susie) Keinon of Ma’ale Adumim, Israel; grandchildren Rabbi Yehoshua Wolfe, Rabbi Danny Wolfe, Dr. Jessica Zimble, Yona Keinon, Malka Cohen, Rafael Keinon and Yair Keinon; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests that memorial contributions can be made to The Jewish Experience and AIPAC.
