Iris June Tandler, 92, a prolific writer and storyteller, passed away March 6, 2021, at her home in Tiburon, Calif. Rabbi Susan Leider of Congregation Kol Shofar officiated at the March 9 service held in Colma, Calif.
“Iris dearly loved, and was dearly loved by, her family,” her loved ones said. “She considered every one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren ‘perfect.’
“She was always available to them and encouraged them in all their endeavors.”
Mrs. Tandler was born in June, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo., to Lee and Pauline Frommel, both immigrants from Russia.
She met Paul Tandler, formerly of Vienna, Austria, at a B’nai B’rith Youth dance on Dec. 5, 1948. They became engaged six months later, on June 5, 1949, and married in October, 1949.
The couple celebrated 71 years of marriage in 2020.
An intelligent woman who welcomed new challenges, Mrs. Tandler enrolled at the University of Missouri at age 44, earned a bachelor’s in education and then taught high school English in St. Louis inner city schools.
After her husband’s 1995 retirement, the couple moved to Tiburon and Mrs. Tandler indulged her passion for writer.
She considered herself a humorist and published many stories in the Marin County Independent Journal and for the Emeritus Students College of Marin newspaper.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers.
Iris June Tandler is survived by her husband Paul Tandler, sons Robert (Valli), Alan (Cindy) and Jon (Susan) Tandler; grandchildren Michelle, Jaclyn, Jeffrey (Kristen), Danielle (Josh Thurm), Ryan, Ari and Talia; and great-grandchildren Madeline, Marisa and Nicholas Tandler, and Audrey Thurm.
Donations in her memory may be made to Congregation Kol Shofar in Tiburon, or Hospice by the Bay.
