Irene Ray Sorin, a resident of Denver and Aurora since 2009, passed away Nov. 29, 2017, at Shalom Park, surrounded by her family and caregivers. Rabbis Bernard Gerson, Yaakov Meyer, Steven Rubenstein and Stephen Booth-Nadav and Cantor Saul Rosenthal officiated at the Dec. 1 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“She was a first-generation American, the child of immigrants, a fluent Yiddish speaker, a child of the Great Depression, a young woman during WW II and a fierce patriot,” her daughter Roni Ogin said at the service.

“Wife of a WW II Army veteran, she was a sister, an aunt, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother — the matriarch of four generations.”

Mrs. Sorin was born on Dec. 5, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY.

After her retirement from Abraham & Strauss (now Macy’s), she volunteered at Shore View Nursing Home in Brooklyn, where she collected and distributed foreign language newspapers and magazines to the residents.

Mrs. Sorin received the “Volunteer Extraordinaire” community service award from the Borough of Brooklyn in 2008.

In 2009, Leo Sorin, her husband of 63 years, passed away.

That same year, Mrs. Sorin moved to Colorado to be near Roni.

An active participant at Kavod Senior Life, Mrs. Sorin enjoyed Shabbat services, adult learning opportunities and completed the Melton Mini School course.

The star of the championship Wii Bowling League, she was an adopted grandmother for Project Story and served on the search committee that hired Rabbi Booth-Nadav at Kavod.

A four-generation life member of Hadassah, Mrs. Sorin moved to Shalom Park in May, 2017.

Mrs. Sorin is survived by her daughter Roni (Gary) Ogin of Denver and son Dr. Robert (Judy) Sorin of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Dr. Marcus (Heather) Oginsky of Denver, Melanie (Craig) Eisen of Greenwood Village, Kimberly Sorin of Austin, Texas, Alexander (Erica) Sorin of Alexandria, Va., Joshua Sorin of Chicago and Adam Sorin of Los Angles; and great-grandchildren Zehariah Oginsky, Bluma Oginsky, Evan Eisen and Avery Eisen.

She is also survived by first cousin Lily Ettinger of New York and brother-in-law Emery Schwartz of New York.

Contributions may be made to Rodef Shalom, Kavod Senior Life, Shalom Park or the LEA Chapter of Hadassah.
