Yesterday the Swiss government announced they were freezing all of Gaddafi’s assets held in Switzerland. (And why – although we’re getting weary of asking the question – is Switzerland safekeeping dictators’ funds in the first place?)
The Swiss National Bank stated that only $630 million of his $5.7 billion remains unfrozen.
Wait a minute! $5.7 billion? A quick visit to Google reveals that the GDP of Libya is $62.36 billion. Can someone tell us why a dictator and his cronies have assets equivalent to nearly 10% of their country’s entire GDP?
So much for the “Great Socialist” republic.
