IJN wins six Rockower awards in Jewish journalism

The Intermountain Jewish News won six Rockower Awards in the 2014 competition sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.

The awards for excellence in Jewish journalism will be presented in November when the AJPA holds its annual conference and awards banquet in Washington, DC in conjunction with the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly.

The IJN’’s centennial edition, “100 Years” (June 24, 2013) won first place for Excellence in Special Sections or Supplements.

Another first place honor was conferred in the category “Excellence in Editorial Writing” for editorials written by Executive Editor Rabbi Hillel Goldberg:

Judges’ comments on the editorials described them as ““beautifully written and strongly argued pieces on an interesting mix of local and global issues.””

IJN Assistant Editor Chris Leppek won both a first place and a second place award for “The Sad, Sad Story of Sally Levin” (June 28, 2013) in the categories of Excellence in Feature Writing and Social Justice Reporting, respectively.

The story was described by judges as “a “fascinating, moving story that used a mix of research and contemporary reporting.””

Hillel Goldberg’’s “Louis D. Brandeis” (Aug. 9, 2013) took second place in the Jacob Rader Marcus Award for Journalistic Excellence in American Jewish History.

““This long analysis of Louis D. Brandeis revisits and reinterprets his transformation into an outstanding Jewish and Zionist leader,”” the judges said.

The IJN won second place for Excellence in Overall Graphic Design.
