IJN wins four Rockower awards in Jewish journalism

The Intermountain Jewish News won four Rockower Awards for 2014 in the January, 2015 competition sponsored by the American Jewish Press Association.

The awards for excellence in Jewish journalism will be presented in November when the AJPA holds its annual conference and awards banquet in Washington, DC in conjunction with the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly.

The IJN won three first place awards and one second place.

One of the first place awards went to IJN Assistant Editor Chris Leppek in the category of excellence in feature writing for “Holocaust Glimpse Takes a Lifetime Toll” (May 23, 2014) about veteran Leon Tulper who was at the liberation of Ohrdruf, the first concentration camp liberated by the Americans.

Judges called Leppek’’s articles ““exceptional,” because “it was all seen through the eyes of a very ordinary man, who lived through an extraordinary event.””

Leppek also garnered a second place award in the category of excellence in personality profiles for “The stuff of legends” (L’’Chaim®, Feb. 28, 2014), a profile of Marshall Fogel’’s incredible collection of baseball memorabilia.

Another first place went to IJN columnist Tehilla R. Goldberg in the category of excellence in commentary for three of her ‘View from Central Park’ columns:

Judges’ comments on Goldberg’’s columns described them as “heartfelt and thoughtful.”

IJN senior writer Andrea Jacobs was awarded first place in the category of excellence in personality profiles for her obituary of Boulder-based leader of the Jewish Renewal movement, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (July 11, 2014).
