The month following the high holidays is somewhat of an anomaly. During Cheshvan we celebrate not a single holiday nor mourn an historical event with a fast day. So what do we do? Well, some of us need a recovery period following the intensity of the month-long Rosh Hashana/Yom Kippur/Sukkot festivities. Others of us are already planning our Chanukah parties (zucchini feta latkes anyone?).
For the kids among us, there’s a creative option: Enter the IJN’s Annual Chanukah Coloring Contest! For twenty-four years, children from mountain area day schools, synagogues and temples have gotten creative with markers, sparkles and colors, portraying their personal relationship to Chanukah.
At the IJN office we love this time of year; the entries arriving daily add a color, brightness and holiday spirit to our regular working day. So start brainstorming: Will it be sufganiyot, menorahs, dreidels or something entirely different?
Winning entries will be published in the IJN’s Chanukah edition, December 16, 2011 and displayed in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital. Entry deadline is 5 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2011.

Rules & Guidelines
• Entries should be submitted in 8 1/2”x11” format. Digital submissions should be accompanied by print version (also on 8 1/2”x11” paper).
• Use any colorful medium — markers, crayons, watercolors, pencils, paper collage — whatever you want. However, no glitter or confetti, please!
• Art must be original. Entries created from kits will be disqualified. All artwork must be the child’s own work.
• There are three categories: 1.) Grades K-1; 2.) Grades 2-3; 3.) Grades 4-6.
• Each entry must be accompanied by the contestant’s name, age, address, school, synagogue affiliation (if any), grade and phone number on a separate sheet of paper, attached to the entry.
