Ida Cohen Sheldon Straus, a volunteer and philanthropist, passed away May 7, 2010, in Englewood. Rabbi Bruce Dollin and Cantor Martin Goldstein officiated at the May 10 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Ida championed many worthy causes throughout her life, the family said.
Ida Rosenberg was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Denver and was raised on the West Side. Her mother and father operated the S. Rosenberg Delicatessen for many years.
During WW II, Ida worked full-time for the war effort. She served coffee and donuts to soldiers on the troop trains; ran the American Red Cross Sky Shack for airmen; and worked with soldiers at Fitzsimmons.
Ida belonged to the National Council of Jewish Women, for which she operated the clothing store for several years.
She also supported Hadassah, Allied Jewish Federation, National Jewish Hospital and many other organizations.
Ida was widowed three times. Her first husband was Maurice Cohen. She then married Herman Sheldon, and later Walker Straus.
An avid golfer who loved the game, Ida also took up painting and was a talented artist.
Ida is survived by her children Rhoda (Larry) Coben and Sheryl (Donald) Adelman; stepchildren Norman (Brenda) Sheldon and Vivian (Ted) Epstein; grandchildren Lori (Stan) Kropp, Scott Weiner, Reid (Ronnie) Rubenstein and Dana Gucuk; and five great-grandchildren.
