Ida Schwarz

Ida SchwarzIda Schwarz, a Holocaust survivor, passed away Jan. 9, 2013 in  Broomfield. She was 91.

Rabbi Marc Soloway officiated at the Jan. 10 graveside service held at Crist Mountain View Cemetery in Boulder. Crist Mountain View made the arrangements.

Mrs. Schwarz was born May 10, 1921 in Berlin. She left for England in August, 1939.

Last fall, in its L’Chaim Magazine, the IJN interviewed Mrs. Schwarz and her sister Doris Small about their experiences in the years leading to the Holocaust in “Sisters and Survival.”

The article related how as orphaned teenagers, the sisters found themselves homeless and witnessed the terrors of Kristallnacht. Finding safe haven with Jewish families in Berlin, the sisters were eventually able to escape to England, Doris as one of the youths included in the Kindertransport program and Ida in a program that allowed Jewish refugees from Germany to become housekeepers in England.

Ida, whose permission to leave Germany came only three days before the start of WW II, joined her sister in London. They both survived the London Blitz.

Mrs. Schwarz emigrated to the US in May, 1948 and settled in New York where she married Steve Schwarz, also a Holocaust survivor, in 1951.

Mrs.Schwarz moved to Broomfield, Colo. following her husband’s death in 1986.

She is survived by her daughters Helen Schwarz and Marjorie (Sid) Augen; sister Doris Small; niece Miriam Saunders; and grandchildren Daniel and Rachel Augen. She was preceded in death by her daughter Susie.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Holocaust Awareness Institute at DU.
