Hilda Schwartz

Hilda SchwartzHilda Ruth Schwartz, a cherished member of Denver’’s Jewish community whose life revolved around family and Jewish tradition, passed away Sept. 2, 2015, in Colorado. Rabbi Bruce Dollin and Cantors Martin Goldstein and Joel Lichterman officiated at the Sept. 4 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

At the service, her daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren spoke about her love and devotion to family and Judaism and her innate ability to welcome people into her home and her heart.

Mrs. Schwartz was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the youngest child of Jacob and Fanny Plattner.

She pursued her religious studies at Talmud Torah, where she and her brother and sisters were members of the choir.

Mrs. Schwartz graduated from St. John’s Tech and later received an MA in social work from the University of Manitoba.

In 1955, Mrs. Schwartz moved to Denver.

She married First Amendment attorney Arthur Schwartz on Dec. 21, 1957, in Denver.

Mrs. Schwartz worked as a social worker with the underprivileged for the American Red Cross and later became an independent travel agent at Polk Majestic Travel.

She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and meeting people wherever she went.

A member of a Yiddish club in Palm Springs, Calif., Mrs. Schwartz frequently volunteered at retirement communities where she had conversations with residents in Yiddish.

She was actively involved in her grandchildren’s school, Cherry Hills Village Elementary, serving as the community representative on the accountability committee and as a judge for the annual student science fair.

Although she left Manitoba 60 years ago, Mrs. Schwartz maintained close relationships with her remaining family and lifelong friends there.

David) Goldberg of Denver, Robyn (Dr. Richard) Sperling of Austin, Texas, and Dr. Lisa Schwartz (Richard Huttner) of Denver; grandchildren Cameron Goldberg, Jared, Gabriel and Lily Sperling and Lauren and Natalie Huttner; and sister Ann Gugenheim and brother Sam (Bettina) Plattner of Denver.
