Herzl-RMHA Tigers qualify for state tourney

For the first time in school history, Herzl-RMHA’ varsity baseball team qualified for the Colorado State Championship Tournament.

Under the leadership of head coach Mike Wolfe and baseball program director Mark Barter, the Herzl-RMHA Tigers baseball team was undefeated in league play (9-0), winning the league championship.

The Tigers went on to finish third in the district playoffs, earning a place in the state tournament.

The Colorado High School Activities Assn. (CHSAA) rearranged the state tournament schedule to accommodate Herzl-RMHA’s Shabbat observance.

On Friday, May 9, the Tigers came within three runs of winning the state quarterfinal game against Caliche High School in Sterling, losing 4-1.

All other quarterfinal games were played in Pueblo, May 10.

Assisting Wolfe and Barter with the varsity coaching duties this year were pitching coach Jack Makovsky, Harley Rotbart and Steve Rotenberg.

There were 22 players on this year’s varsity and junior varsity high school teams.

Combined with 30 players on the middle school team, under the direction of middle school head coach David Kaufman, Barter and assistant coaches Makovsky, Ken Miller, Mark Parmet and Ken Taga, the 52 players this year marked the largest ever for participation by Herzl-RMHA students in the school’s baseball program.

The varsity Tigers baseball team was led by pitchers Sam Rotbart (6 wins, ERA 2.17, 66 strikeouts in 42 innings); and Shane Morris (3 wins, ERA 3.67, 21 strikeouts in 21 innings).
