Harvey Greenberg
Harvey J. Greenberg, 77, an honored operational researcher, passed away June 29, 2018, in Denver. Rabbi Steven Kaye officiated at the July 5 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Rabbi Sandra Cohen will lead the memorial service on Wednesday, July 25 at Feldman Mortuary. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
“Harvey was a devoted husband and father, and his gregarious personality motivated his joy in spending time with family and friends,” his loved ones said.
“His contributions in operational research addressed vital challenges ranging from environmental quality control to water network optimization to computational biology.”
Mr. Greenberg was born Oct. 16, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Morris and Ada Greenberg. When he was a teen, the family moved to Miami, Fla.
He graduated from high school in Miami, 1958; earned a BS in industrial engineering from the University of Miami, 1962; and a PhD in operations research from Johns Hopkins, 1968.
Mr. Greenberg, who made numerous contributions to his field of study, received the Harold Larnder Prize from the Canadian Operational Research Society in 1999.
Chief among his accomplishments was directing the forecasting group that helped guide national energy policy following the oil embargo of 1973.
Mr. Greenberg held academic positions at UCD, Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech.
He was a strong leader of and advocate for the INFORMS Computing Society, which initiated the Harvey J. Greenberg Award for Service in 2009.
Mr. Greenberg is survived by his wife Ellie Greenberg of Denver; daughter Chari (Tom) Smith; and grandsons Miles and Max of Portland, Ore.
He was predeceased by his son Ari Greenberg.
