Happy Chanukah!

We realize that Judaism follows the lunar calendar; nevertheless, we’re glad that we too have a holiday as the secular year is winding down. It’s amazing that at the end of what could be characterized as a particularly difficult year, in the midst of a recession, only weeks after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, we celebrate a holiday of joy born of perseverance and faith. This isn’t a typical somber, synagogue-filled affair, but instead eight days of family, fun, food – and light.

Just three weeks ago, at the memorial service for Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg, Rabbi Yisroel Engel of Chabad-Lubavitch spoke passionately and emotionally about what lesson could be taken from the horrific events: “We can transform the world – a world riddled with darkness – into a world permeated with holiness and light and goodness and kindness.”

What better opportunity to spread – or even discover – the light than Chanukah, the festival that celebrates light itself.

Luckily, Chabad provides us with the chance to do so. Throughout this week, various Chabad centers throughout Colorado are public menorah lightings, in Parker, Highlands Ranch, Colorado Mills Mall, and Golden. Two Chanukah on Ice events are being held, in Centennial and Westminster. All will be accompanied by food and music.

If you’re unable to attend a Chabad menorah lighting, or are looking for something different, check out our Community Calendar for Chanukah happenings in the Denver-Boulder area.

Best wishes for a fun and meaningful holiday!
