Haber honored at Jewish Film Festival opening night

Sharon HaberTHE opening night of the 16th Denver Jewish Film Festival, showcasing a theme based on the recipient of MACC’s Cultural Achievement Award, will be Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at the JCC.

This year’s cultural award recipient is Sharon Haber, an instrumental player in the film festival’s popularity.

“Sharon is a dynamic force behind the success of the film festival,” says Roberta Bloom, director of the festival.

“She is intelligent, funny and brings with her a diverse set of important skills. I could not ask for a better partner.”

Originally from New York City, Haber has lived in Denver for over 30 years.

Although she currently serves as the festival’s chair, Haber has been a volunteer, supporter and former art director for MACC and the JCC since the 1970s.

After leaving the JCC, she ran a Cherry Creek art gallery for several years but always cherished her position as JCC art director.

She has also been a “fundraising powerhouse” for the JCC.

“Contributions, both directly and indirectly solicited by Sharon, have truly contributed to our growth over the last few years,” says MACC Executive Artistic Director Steve Wilson.

“As chair of the film festival committee, her ability to fundraise is legendary and her love for community and culture is exemplary.”

IN homage to Haber’s New York roots, the buffet dinner will feature the tastes of the Big Apple.

The Keith Oxman Trio will also perform its distinctive jazz sounds.

Following the dinner, the 90-minute Israeli film “Restoration” will be screened.

The film tells the story of Fidelman, whose life is turned upside down when his longtime partner in the furniture restoration business suddenly passes away.

With the business on the edge of bankruptcy, his son, Noah, is eager to close the business.

But a mysterious stranger appears who enables Fidelman to see new possibilities for the restoration business.

“Restoration” has been nominated for 11 Israeli Academy Awards, won Best Film at the Jerusalem Film Festival and the dramatic screenwriting award at the Sundance Film Festival.
