Guide to Tel Aviv?

Disclaimer: I am using this particular blog entry for selfish purposes. You see, I’ll be traveling to Israel this week, and I’m looking for tips and recommendations for Tel Aviv. I haven’t been to the coastal city in close to seven years (spending more time usually in Jerusalem), although I still have strong memories of Ottoman-era buildings, mountains of brightly pigmented spices, and sea breezes. But a lot changes in seven years, especially in a growing city like Tel Aviv. So I’m in the market for some café, gallery, shopping etc. recommendations.

Here’s what I’ve got so far on the agenda:

  • “White City”: Visit the Tel Aviv’s famed Bahaus buildings.
  • Sabich: an Iraqi sandwich sublime for a vegetarian (which I am). Apparantly it takes falafel to a whole new level, stuffing eggplant and an hardboiled egg in there as well.
  • Galleries: There’s a burgeoning art scene in Tel Aviv, with galleries featuring the work of up and coming artists dotting the city.
  • Old Jaffa: The famed flea market, cafés stuffed with old furniture, and Dr Shakshuka – the place to go for authentic North African food.
  • The spice market in Florentin, with small mountains of turmeric and baskets brimming with hibiscus.

So how about it? Your tips in exchange for pictures and notes to be posted here, on Rocky Mountain Jew, following my trip. Are you up for it?

Check out Neve Tsedek if you’re into art, and also the Tachana. It just opened and it’s a shopping/art/cafe complex not far from the beach.
