The 21st annual Clean-Up Day of the historic Hill section of Golden Hill Cemetery will be Sunday, May 15, 8:30 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m.
Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, closed-toed shoes and work gloves.
If possible, people are asked to bring their own hand tools, such as rakes, shovels and pruning shears.
This section is the final resting place of over 700 Jews who came to Colorado seeking a cure from tuberculosis, only to succumb to the dreaded disease.
The vast majority of those buried on the Hill died as paupers and were buried free of charge by the West Side Benevolent Society.
Many of the dead were infants or children.
In 1991, Ted Ruskin, Debbie Hailpern and a number of concerned members of the Jewish community organized a volunteer day to clean-up this long-neglected area of Golden Hill Cemetery.
The event has gathered the support of the Synagogue Council of Denver, and many volunteers have made this a yearly activity.
Everyone is encouraged to participate, including children under the supervision of their parents.
Refreshments will be provided.
Golden Hill is located at 12000 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood.
The Hill section is located on the south side of Colfax Avenue at the crest of the hill, one-half mile west of Simms Blvd.
