Gladys S. Winter

Gladys WinterGladys S. “Babs” Winter, 86, passed away in Las Vegas on Aug. 14, 2008.

A memorial service was held Aug. 20 at Temple Emanuel. Interment will be held at a later date.

She was born in Denver on Feb. 4, 1922, attended schools in Denver and graduated from Denver’s East High School and the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Mrs. Winter was the daughter of the late Sara and Ed “Doc” Silverberg — both also Denver natives — and was married for more than 47 years to the late Mandell S Winter, Sr.

Mrs. Winter loved the theatre, was on many stage crews for Little Theatre productions at CU and participated in most of the fundraising productions at Temple Emanuel.

She served on the Sisterhood of Temple Emanuel, was president of the district sisterhood — encompassing those groups in many adjacent states — and chaired the Temple Emanuel Gift Shop for several years.

She taught parliamentary procedure alongside her late, great-aunt Mindell Stein, and was active in a local branch of AAUW. She was a tireless volunteer for Temple Emanuel, Historic Denver (in particular with its Night In Old Denver program) and Rocky Mountain PBS.

After moving to Las Vegas in 1988, she joined the local AAUW and helped form a new branch of that organization, serving as its first president. She was also parliamentarian with that group and with another charitable organization in Las Vegas, the Town Club.

Additionally, Mrs. Winter joined several Vegas groups to pursue some of her favorite pastimes — mahjongg, bidge and attending plays and the symphony.

Until shortly before a stroke in August, 2006, she continued to travel to visit family and other places in the world.

She is survived by her brother Stuart O. (Sandy) Silverberg of Golden; and her children Barbara of Estes Park, Mandell, Jr. (Pat) of Denver, and David of Los Angeles. Survivors also include her grandchildren: Wendy (Greg) Oldright of Lewisburg, PA, Kendra (Walt) Hester of Estes Park, Mandell III (Bari) of Los Angeles, Ben (Jamie) of Aurora, and great-grandchild, Zoe Hester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Winter-Frankel Shwayder Camp Fund of Temple Emanuel, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Diabetes Association.
