Members of the Colorado Sudanese community will gather Tuesday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m., on the West steps of the State Capitol with Colorado activists to call attention to the genocide in various parts of Sudan.
Speakers will include :
Rt Rev. Andudu Adam Elnail, the Anglican bishop of Kadugli in South Kordofan, who provided moving testimony describing ethnic cleansing, murders, rapes and the growing humanitarian crises at an emergency congressional hearing in Washington, DC.; and
Omhagain Dayeen, who recently returned from a four-month visit to her homeland of Darfur.
Co-sponsors of this event are the Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness and Action and the Sudanese Community of Colorado.
The purpose of the press conference and rally is to launch a campaign that will bring awareness to Coloradans about what the Sudanese government has been doing to its own people.
There have been five genocides: one in South Sudan in the 1980s-2005; one in the Nuba Mountains in the early 1990s; one in Darfur from 2003 until the present: one in Eastern Sudan,1994-2005: and now a second time in the Nuba Mountains and Abyei.
These crimes have resulted in the displacement of over seven million people and the deaths of nearly three million people.
This event will call for:
An end to all attacks in Sudan that violate international humanitarian law, and hold all those responsible to accoun;.
Deployment of a neutral UN peacekeeping force in Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan;
Cooperation with the International Crminal Court, including surrender of President Al-Bashir and indicted war criminal Ahmed Haroun;
A no-fly zone in the Numba Mountains/South Kordofan states and in the Darfur region to protect civilians from bombings;
Unfettered access by UNAMID peacekeepers and humanitarian activists to all parts of Sudan;
Disarmament of the dangerous Popular Defense Force (PDF) in the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan and removal of Sudanese government militias and Janjaweed militias in Darfur;
End to harassment, detention and torture of journalists, human rights workers and activists, and their immediate release;
End the Sudanese government policy of dismantling IDP camps in Darfur and of deliberately preventing food, water and medical supplies from reaching civilians as a weapon of war; and
Freezing assets of the Khartoum regimes leaders and their businesses.
