Frieda Makovsky Englard died peacefully at her home in Denver on April 25, 2012, just six weeks shy of her 96th birthday. Her grandson Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone officiated at the April 25 graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
During her life, Frieda radiated Jewish values, the family said. She actively supported traditional Jewish education, especially DAT. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren considered her as their personal mentor.
She inspired so many, and her heritage lives on through her family and many friends.
Frieda was the last surviving sibling of nine children in the Shames family, all born in Denver, as was her father Jacob.
In 1939, Frieda married Samuel Makovsky and moved to Pueblo, where their children Haim, Evan and Jan were born.
Frieda was instrumental in promoting a rich Jewish-Zionist atmosphere in Pueblo through the United Hebrew Center, the UHC Sisterhood, Israel Bonds, Hadassah, Young Judea and other organizations.

She returned to Denver in 1982 when her husband Sam needed medical treatment. He passed away in 1986.
In 1991, Frieda married Holocaust survivor Fred Englard, with whom she lived until his passing in 2003. Freds only daughter Yvonne maintained a close relationship with Frieda until her last days.
Frieda is survived by her children Haim (Yaffa) Makovsky of Israel, Evan (Evi) Makovsky of Denver and Janet (Dr. Philip) Lightstone of Denver; stepdaughter Yvonne (Richard) Zuber of Denver; grandchildren Ami (Dafna) Makovsky, Racheli (Yossi) Corem, Nesya (Avihai) Shabtai, Avishai (Natalie) Makovsky, Noah (Arinn) Makovsky, Dorit (Aryeh) Fischer, Elana (Josh) Parver, Tamar Lightstone, Rabbi Aryeh (Estee) Lightstone and Sam (Leah) Lightstone; step grandchildren Sam Zuber and Kendra Shore; and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her granddaughter Shira Makovsky.
