The 12th annual Fred Marcus Memorial Holocaust Lecture will be Sunday, Oct. 26, 2-4 p.m., at the Loup JCC Wolf Theatre.
This years guest, Judy Winnick, will present her original one-act, one-person play, Miep Gies: A Beacon of Hope.
Miep, the petite, humble woman who helped hide Anne Frank and her family in Amsterdam during WW II, provided food and other basic necessities to the attic residents, and also served as their link to the outside world.
In her diary, Anne wrote, It seems as if we are never far from Mieps thoughts.
Winnick has been portraying extraordinary women from WWI II history, including Irena Sendler and Miep Gies, since her retirement from teaching in Littleton Public Schools.
Her hundreds of performances have engaged adults and middle and high school students throughout Colorado and other Western states, as well as in Europe, earning praise from students, as well as from audiences at libraries, universities, historical societies, synagogues, churches and organizations.
One viewer stated, Judys heartfelt, well-researched and skillful performance captured the minds and spirits of the audience. None of us are likely to forget it!
Winnick states, The women I portray inspire me with their courage, humility, compassion and the message that one person can make a difference.
Like Winnick, Fred Marcus devoted countless hours to speaking to school children, organizations, churches and synagogues about his experiences as a refugee in Shanghai and about the Holocaust in general.
The lecture was established in Freds memory in 2003 by his wife, Audrey Friedman Marcus, and her family, and over the years has become an important event in the Denver community.
