Feldman Mortuary marks 75th anniversary

Jim CohenFELDMAN Mortuary is celebrating its 75th anniversary as a Denver Jewish mortuary.

In April, 1936, Samuel Feldman opened a funeral home and transportation service for Denver’s Jewish community, offering “Denver’s only Jewish hearse.”

Over the past 75 years, four generations of the Feldman family have worked to continue to uphold the traditions of the community and made Feldman Mortuary a Denver institution and respected, independent firm of funeral directors in the metro area.

“Generations of Denver’s Jewish community have come to rely on Feldman Mortuary for superior service, compassionate care and reasonable prices,” said Jim Cohen, Feldman Mortuary president.

“We appreciate the trust and confidence the community has placed in us over the years, and pledge to continue to fullfill our promise and commitment to the community for many years to come.”

The original Feldman Mortuary was located in downtown Denver at 1452 Tremont.

In 1939, two years after Sam Feldman’s death, his daughter Dorothy and son-in-law Aaron Cohen decided to move the funeral home from Tremont to its current location at 1673 York St.

Over the next 41 years, Aaron and Dorothy continued to weave the Feldman-Cohen family and Feldman Mortuary into the fabric of Denver’s Jewish community.

“My grandmother, now aged 94, remains a living historian of Denver’s Jewish community,” said Jim Cohen. “She can tell us who is related to whom and a special story or two about the family.”

In the summer of 1980, Steve Cohen succeeded his father Aaron in the business, relocating his family from St. Louis to Denver so he could continue the legacy of Feldman Mortuary.

“My father worked diligently at forging relationships and community ties, while maintaining the continuity of the business,” said Jim Cohen.

“His leadership for over 25 years prepared the business for the future generations to continue Feldman Mortuary’s important work.”

Jim Cohen joined the business in 1995 and has served as president of the company since 2005.

“There is no greater pride than what I feel when I think about celebrating 75 years in business,” said Cohen.

“I would like to personally thank every family that has selected Feldman to help them through their time of need and enabled us to reach this historic milestone.”

In honor of its 75th anniversary, Feldman Mortuary has opened a satellite office in southeast Denver inside JFS at Hampden and Tamarac and will be opening a second satellite office in the next few weeks on the campus of Shalom Park in Aurora.

Both offices will be used for all aspects of funeral planning, including pre-planning and service coordination.

Although, these offices will not be available for on-site memorial services, Feldman is exploring the use of alternative settings and outdoor environments for memorial events.

“WE’RE delighted to have a convenient setting to meet people within the warm, caring environments of JFS and Shalom Park,” said Cohen.

“We value the sense of community that permeates these settings and look forward to contributing our resources there.”

Feldman Mortuary has added a host of offerings to stay relevant in today’s world.

People choosing Feldman have new methods of honoring their loved one, including online memorials, as well as new funeral settings and funeral services.
