Faye G. Schayer, a longtime Denver resident and respected member of the Jewish community, passed away March 30, 2009, in Denver.
Rabbi Steven Foster and Cantor Regina Heit were scheduled to officate at the April 2 service at Temple Emanuel, with nterment at Emanuel Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.
Faye Goldie Greenberg was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Pueblo to a Russian immigrant father and an English immigrant mother. She was an honors student, editor of the high school paper, and a ballet dancer.
She went to DU on scholarship and earned a degree in social work.
While at DU, she met Charles Schayer. They were married in Aug., 1941, and spent 55 years together.
Mrs. Schayers first business venture was a concession stand at the old bus depot on 17th and Glenarm. That small enterprise ultimately mushroomed into a network of concession stands in hotels and airports all over the US.
She was asked to run the concession in the African Pavilion at the New York Worlds Fair, 1964-1965. The Schayers went on a three-month buying trip throughout Africa to stock the stand.
Mrs. Schayer sold the business after 20 years.
Free to volunteer and participate in philanthropic activities, she was president of the Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society, vice president of the American Jewish Historical Society, and active with the Ladies Library Assn. at DU and the Central City Opera.
She loved the symphony and the ballet, spending her summers enjoying the musical festivals in Aspen.
Mrs. Schayer wrote and published the history of Charles Schayers mothers family. She traveled to England and throughout the US for research. The book is in the Colorado history department collection at the Denver Public Library.
Mr. Schayer predeceased his wife.
Mrs. Schayer is survived by her children Charles (Janet) Schayer and Karen Petie Horton; grandchildren Heidi and Peter Horton, Carrie (Bill) George, Caitlin, Carly and Charles Schayer IV.
