Farewell, Mike Shanahan

Mike Shanahan, former coach of the Denver BroncosWednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, marked the saddest day in the Denver Broncos history.

The day before, it was learned that Mike Shanahan, Broncos head football coach for 14 years with two Super Bowl victories to his credit, had been fired by Pat Bowlen, Broncos owner for a quarter of a century.

Jim Saccomano, vice president of media relations and a key figure in the Bronocs organization for 31 years, took over the duties and responsibilities of organizing Wednesday’s press conference, which included all Bronco staff members.

Saccomano handled things accordingly. An hour was set aside in the Bronocs auditorium at Dove Valley.

Needless to say, the place was packed. TV cameras abounded everywhere. It was decided both Bowlen and Shanahan would have a half an hour at their disposal to talk and answer questions.

Both talked succinctly. They left no or few questions unanswers. Both sobbed and showed broken hearts. No one present could fail to conclude that there was not one iota of bitterness or acrimony shown by the owner or the coach during the entire time.

Whether their strong relationship was fractured forever, only time will tell.
