Ethel Levy Goren, a loving wife, mother, and respected career woman, passed away April 26, 2016, in Bloomington, Ind. Rabbi Bernard Gerson and Cantor Saul Rosenthal officiated at the May 2 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Funeral Home in Indianapolis and Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

“She was a true woman of valor, who excelled in all she did,” the family said. “Most inspiring was her devoted, compassionate and loving care of her daughter Phyllis, who suffered from a progressive degenerative disease.”

Although she left Denver in 2010 to be near her daughter Risë in Bloomington, “she remained a staunch Broncos fan,” her loved ones said.

“Thank G-d she lived to see them win the Super Bowl!”

Mrs. Goren was born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Houston, Texas, where she attended Rice University.

She married Mayer Bear Goren on May 23, 1943, and moved to California, where her husband was stationed in the Navy.

Mrs. Goren graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1944.

In 1966, Mrs. Goren became the administrative assistant in the division of research at National Jewish Hospital in Denver. She retired in 1991.

Mr. Goren passed away on Oct. 9, 2005.

Active in Hadassah, synagogue, book clubs, bridge and women’s groups, Mrs. Goren also belonged to a chavurah.

Mrs. Goren is survived by her siblings Sadie Greenman and Harry Greenman of Houston; daughter Risë Koben of Bloomington, Ind.; son-law Steve Cook of Bloomington; and sister-in-law Hannah Galerstein of Dallas, Texas.

She was predeceased by her daughter Phyllis Goren on May 21, 1990.

Contributions may be made to Hadassah or National Jewish Health.
