Ervin J. Bell of Boulder, an architect who in 1950 founded the Architectural Index, an annual index for architectural magazines, passed away Dec. 1, 2015, in Boulder. ?He was 90.
Services were held Dec. 4 at Greenwood & Myers funeral home in Boulder. Greenwood & Myers made the arrangements.
A reception in Mr. Bell’s honor was held at his Boulder home on Dec. 5.
Mr. Bell was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Denver. He graduated from East High School in 1943.
After serving in WW II, he earned degrees in architectural engineering and business at CU.
Mr. Bell, who received his MA in architecture from the University of California-Berkeley, designed residential solar housing.
He served on the faculty at CU, the planning board of Boulder, and published the Architectural Index for more than 50 years.
Described as a lifelong learner, Mr. Bell loved Tai Chi, pottery, skiing, design, dance and Zen Buddhism.
Mr. Bell is survived by Mary Ellen Bell, his wife of 52 years; daughters Katie (Mike) MacPhail and Emily (Gerald) Uy; grandsons Andrew and Matthew MacPhail and Miles Uy; and his brother Leonard Bell.
