Erich Callmann, an auditor with the US government, passed away Dec. 17, 2012, in Denver. Rabbi Adam Morris officiated at the Dec. 28 service at Temple Micah.
Eric was a Holocaust survivor in the Shanghai ghetto, the family said. For many years, he shared his story at schools throughout Denver as a speaker for the Holocaust Awareness Institute.
He was proud to be a Korean War veteran and belonged to Temple Micah for 15 years.
Mr. Callmann was born Feb. 9, 1924, in Berlin, Germany. He fled Berlin as a teen and went to Shanghai. Immediately after the war, he worked for the US Armys motor pool in Shanghai.
On Sept. 11, 1950, Mr. Callmann married Liselotte Roetsch in Berlin.
He came to the US in 1950 and settled in Allentown, Penn., where he lived for many years.
After fighting in the Korean War with the US Army, he went to college on the GI bill and graduated from Muhlenberg College in Allentown in 1960.
During his career as an auditor for the US government, Mr. Callmann worked for several government agencies, including one in Germany. He retired in 1990.
He moved to Denver several years ago, the family said.
Mr. Callmann is survived by his wife Liselotte Lilo Callmann of Breinigsville, Pa.; children Luther (Maureen) Callmann of Kutztown, Pa., Clarissa (Joel) Callmann-Bencan of Ambler, Pa., Ingrid Callmann of Easton, Pa., and Eric Callmann of Denver; grandchildren Cassandra Callmann, Austin Callmann, Zachary (Ashley) Callmann Bencan, Adam Callmann Bencan; and great-grandson Jackson Bencan.
