Elaine Singer
Elaine Singer, a longtime Denver resident, caterer and member of BMH-BJ, passed away Jan. 29, 2019, in Pittsburgh, Pa. Rabbi Daniel Wasserman officiated at the Jan. 31 graveside service at Shaare Torah Cemetery in Pittsburgh. Chevra Kadisha of Pittsburgh made the arrangements.
“Everyone will remember her as the Queen of Hamantaschen at BMH-BJ,” the family said. “Throughout her 40 years of catering, Elaine and Oscar [Singer] made thousands of these sweet treats for the Purim carnival.
“Elaine, an outspoken advocate of women’s rights, encouraged her husband, children and grandchildren to follow their hearts and dreams.”
Mrs. Singer was born Oct. 17, 1929, in Chicago, Ill. She graduated East High School in Aurora, Ill., and attended Northwestern University.
An accomplished professional musician, Mrs. Singer was discovered at age four by a concert pianist who heard her play piano at the Chicago JCC.
She subsequently performed professionally at various venues in the Chicago area.
In Chicago, Mrs. Singer was employed as a women’s clothing buyer and marking room supervisor at Bramson’s.
She married Oscar Singer on Jan. 12, 1957, and the couple moved to Denver.
Mrs. Singer, who worked at Montaldo’s in Denver, co-owned Buddy’s Drive-In and Singer’s Gourmet Catering with her husband.
The Singers later moved to Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Singer is survived by husband Oscar Singer of Pittsburgh; children Samuel J. Eric (Jerilyn) Singer of Parrish, Fla. and Lee Ruth Singer (Dr. Marnin) Fischbach of Pittsburgh; grandchildren Shane Amir Fischbach and Darya Michal Fischbach; step-grandchildren Kerem Szczebak and Jordan (Yael Silk) Fischbach; and nieces and a nephew.
