Edith Levisohn

Edith LevisohnEdith Levisohn, 94, one of the founders of Hillel Academy, passed away Feb. 12, 2009, in Jerusalem, Israel. She was laid to rest in Jerusalem.

The family said that Mrs. Levisohn “lived through a century of turmoil for the Jewish people, openly and firmly advocating for Jewish renewal despite the tragedy which had befallen European Jewry.”

At the service, son-in-law Rabbi Gary Feder said Mrs. Levisohn “never squandered an opportunity in life. Her philosophy was to live life to the fullest.”

Edith Blumenthal was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Due to increasing anti-Semitism, she immigrated to the US in 1936 at the age of 21.

In New York, she worked with German-Jewish refugees and for Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

She married Dr. Leonard Levisohn in 1939 and moved to Cimarron, NM, and then Denver.

In 1952, Mrs. Levisohn and her husband helped found Hillel Academy with other members of the Orthodox community. She worked with Jewish educational organizations throughout her life.

Mrs. Levisohn also taught her husband to ski, and it became their passion.

Dr. Levisohn passed away in 1992.

After splitting her time between Denver and Israel for many years, she made aliyah in 1997 and became a full-time resident of Jerusalem four years ago.

Mrs. Levisohn is survived by her children Dr. Steve (Sybil) Levisohn of Boston, Dr. Paul (Ruth) Levisohn of Denver and Dr. Janice (Rabbi Gary) Feder of Jerusalem; 12 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.
