Dr. Theodore Herbert Salzberg, a former Denver resident, passed away Aug. 19, 2010, in Marlborough, Mass. He was 93.
Dr. Salzberg was born May 16, 1917, in New York City to Philip and Helen Salzberg.
After obtaining a bachelors degree at the City College of New York, he worked briefly for the US Navy in Washington, DC.
He met his future wife Hilda Herzel there while playing softball.
They were married in 1942, shortly after he was drafted into the US Army.
Dr. Salzberg served in the North African and Italian campaigns and was badly wounded in 1944 in Italy. He received the Purple Heart.
The doctor spent more than a year recovering in an Alabama hospital and returned to Denver, where Mrs. Salzberg had grown up. He left the army with the rank of captain.
Dr. Salzberg attended DU on the GI bill and obtained an EdD degree in psychology in 1951.
The family belonged to Temple Emanuel until they left Denver in 1956.
Dr. Salzberg worked for the VA hospital in Denver, Los Angeles and Martinsburg, W. Virginia.
He also served as a Peace Corps administrator for three years, designing psychological tests for prospective volunteers.
Dr. and Mrs. Salzberg lived at Cherry Oaks in Denver from 1995-2005. They moved to Marlborough, Mass., in 2006 to be near their daughter.
Mrs. Salzberg passed away in 2007.
Dr. Salzberg is survived by his children Betty (Lawrence Morris) Salzberg of Wayland, Mass., and Kenneth (Pat Price) Salzberg of Falcon Heights, Minn.; sister-in-law Suzanne Fraitag (Alex) Shapiro of Denver; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
